Firo/Zcoin turns 10 today Firo turns 10 today.
It originally launched as Zcoin back in 2016, long before privacy coins became as technically diverse as they are now. It was one of the first privacy coins implementing ZK technology even before Zcash. It has had a fairly unusual path: a rebrand, several privacy-protocol iterations, and plenty of setbacks and debates along the way.
The project moved from its early Zerocoin roots through Sigma and Lelantus, and eventually launched Lelantus Spark on mainnet in 2024. Spark is Firo’s current privacy protocol and supports private transactions with hidden amounts, while also introducing things such as Spark addresses and view keys.
Firo is still proof-of-work, using FiroPoW, and it also has a masternode layer. Whether someone is bullish on privacy coins or not, I think it is notable that a relatively small project has kept building and iterating for a full decade instead of disappearing after one market cycle.
